SongsThe other day I was chatting with a dear friend about one of our favorite subjects—David Archuleta. We have been talking weekly and we get together for visits as much as we can because we live a few hours apart in different states. We do our best to stay connected and she has become a very cherished friend. The neat thing about this friend is that I met her because of our common admiration for David!
I have met more than a few people who have since become ‘treasured friends’ because of our common interest and love for David and his music. All these wonderful people are the most kind, sincere, honest and truly amazing people who I have had the pleasure of getting to know. Some I have never physically met, yet we have corresponded since shortly after David finished his time on American Idol’s Season 8. Often I feel as though we have known each other for years. We share stories, joke, talk about family, share milestones and we have even helped each other through some difficult times.
We have become involved in charities and have reached out to help others in need because we want to follow David’s example. Our common bond is our true admiration and respect for the most talented and humble young man that we simply adore listening to…David Archuleta!
I have heard many other fans of David’s share that they too have made incredible friendships because of him. David Archuleta has such a strong following of the most lovely people…good people! We are young and old, male and female. We come from all walks of life, but because of David Archuleta, we come together, whether it is to chat about all the latest he is doing while touring, discussing our favorite performances of his, or sharing our excitement about our next concert, we all agree that he has a voice that moves us.
These friends we have made are the ones that understand our ODD. They understand when we talk about how excited we are to see David perform even though we have seen him several times. They get it! They listen to his music daily too, they check all the latest on David’s various fan sites. They ‘get him’ the way we do! His humbleness, his adorably sweet awkwardness, but most of all his incredible talent! They hear what we do….a voice that soothes and touches the heart and soul.
So this week I would like to dedicate ‘The Song of the Week’ to all my “friends in David” as I like to call them. ( Gail, this one is for you!) 😉
The Song of the Week is…
“Fields of Gold”
“Fields of Gold”was written by the singer, Sting, for his album Ten Summoner’s Tales which was released in 1993. “Fields of Gold” is a beautiful but haunting melody that speaks of the love, courtship and eventual death of a lover. Sting reportedly wrote “Fields of Gold” after he bought a house near a barley field in England. Supposedly, the sunsets and the colors of the field were an inspiration for the lyrics.
The song “Fields of Gold” reached #23 on Billboard’s Hot 100 of that year. The song was recorded by Eva Cassidy for her album Song Bird. The version we hear David sing is most like Eva Cassidy’s.
Here is David singing “Fields of Gold” for the first time in front of an audience, while on tour recently in his home state of Utah.
The lyrics to “Fields of Gold” as David sings them:
Hooooo, oooh, oooh
You’ll remember me when the west wind moves
Among the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in fields of goldSo she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Among the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
As we walked in fields of goldWill you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
As we walked in fields of goldI never made promises like these
And there have been some that I’ve broken
But I swear in the days still left
We’ll walk in fields of gold
We’ll walk in fields of goldHooooo, oooh, oooh
Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
As we lie in fields of goldWill you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
As we walked in fields of gold
We walked in fields of gold
We walked in fields of gold.Hooooo, oooh, oooh
Now here is Eva Cassidy’s version of “Fields of Gold”:
And finally, Sting singing his song “Fields of Gold”:
The original lyrics of “Fields of Gold” as written by Sting:
You’ll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You’ll forget the sun in his jealous sky as we walk in fields of gold
So she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of Barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold
Will you stay with me will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
We’ll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in fields of gold
See the west wind move like a lover so
Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
Among the fields of gold
I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I’ve broken
But I swear in the days still left
We’ll walk in fields of gold
We’ll walk in fields of gold
Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold
You’ll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold
Have a lovely week all. I am grateful to David, that I am able to call many of you my friends! 😉

Katie, thank you for posting these three different versions of “Fields of Gold”. Sting’s version has been a favorite of mine for years as I’ve heard my boys play it on the piano over and over and over, eventually perfecting it as they were learning to play the piano. Every time I’ve heard this song since AI 7, I’ve thought how great it would be to hear David sing it. It had become my David dream song. I listened to Eva sing it on You Tube after David mentioned liking her version. I still preferred Sting’s version. When I heard that David sang this song in Utah, I was glued to You Tube waiting to hear it for the first time and I was not disappointed. It was sooooooooo much better than I had imagined all those times I had heard David’s voice singing it in my head (yes, obviously ODD, I can hear him sing songs, that I’ve never actually heard him sing).
I enjoyed your post and listened to each version again today, saving David’s for last. All I can say is WOW, what he does with that song, there is no comparison.
Sorry I am so late responding but I was on the road to KC last week for David’s concert and just trying to catch up today. It’s been hard to get out of You Tube, if you know what I mean.
