David Archuleta has been writing with the Jackie Boyz in Los Angeles this week with Dapo and Nasri. It looks like his album is coming along beautifully. If some of his songs are soft R&B like many of the Jackie Boyz album, The Beginning, we are in for a real treat! Soft and Sweet!

The sultry sounds of R&B mixed with modern day music complete this triple threat duo, The Jackie Boyz (@JackieBoyz). Their ability to write, sing, and perform has paved the way for their success. They are currently working with award winning producers and artists such as Flo Rida, Harvey Mason Jr., Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, Brian Kennedy, Rob Knox (of The Underdogs), and The StereoTypes, to name a few. They have proved their talents ensure hits and they are highly sought after knowing that they bring success to each of the projects they are involved with.

As Songwriters they continue to explode on the scene collaborating on:

+ Flo Rida’s recent hit “Sugar” released March 21st, 2009.

+ Justin Beiber’s third single “Down to Earth” to release in fall 09’

As Artists they started their music career singing at the pier on River Street in Savannah, Georgia, where they were born and raised. Their inspiration and love for music was instilled in them early on from their mother Jackie Battey (R.I.P). Their name, The Jackie Boyz, carries on the memory of their mother through their music and reaches out to their fans…Southern Style. The Boyz arrived in LA three years ago and have been grinding it out ever since. They are currently performing locally and in the studio coming up with fresh concepts and ideas.

As Businessmen they are developing an empire based on innovative visions and pure talent. The Jackie Boyz (@JackieBoyz) are building the type of relationships and recognition that sets their value apart from others in today’s industry. They have established two publishing companies, Apartment 4 Publishing and Mall B Publishing, both affiliated with ASCAP. Jackie Boyz are very diverse songwriters with the ability to write many styles, including pop, rock, r&b, and hooks. There is no music challenge that they cannot face; just stick them in a room without music and you will end up with a great song!

The Jackie Boyz have recently come out with their debut album entitled, The Beginning. The album can be digitally downloaded via Amazon.

David Archuleta – Surprise Appearance at the Mint in Los Angeles

23 February 2010

David Archuleta paid a surprise appearance at the Mint in LA last night, February 22, and was jamming with other singer-songwriters.

A local landmark, this Los Angeles night club was established in 1937 and celebrated its 70th year here in 2007. It is best known for its live music and over the years many greats have not only played here, but got their start at The Mint. Back in the day, the likes of Stevie Wonder, Willie Dixon, Natalie Cole, Ray Charles and more graced its stage. More recently, Ben Harper, Macy Gray, and The Wallflowers honed their craft and kicked off their careers playing this Los Angeles night club. Although The Mint is known mainly for live music, many people come just to hang out, grab some tapas style cuisine and some drinks. The kitchen is usually open until midnight.

David Archuleta + American Idol – It Was For The Love Of Music!

22 February 2010

David Archuleta’s eyes reveal his love for Music!

“That tingling feeling again, I only get it when I sing!”

close up of David Archuleta singing

Over the last few weeks watching American Idol, I was surprised by most of the reasons the contestants gave for being there. The obvious reason, they like to sing! The most common explanation was to care of their family, for their child or parents—admirable reasons for wanting the title. What was missing was the love for the music. Has singing become just a job with good pay and fame?

From the beginning David Archuleta always said he loves music and feels it with such emotion. His passion for singing and wanting others to feel what he feels when he sings has been his priority. Transcending music’s emotions to his audience is what he does best. He takes us on that flight, a journey for our soul while he is singing and brings us back better than we were before.

All his life, he has been in love with music! It’s hard to explain, but nothing captivates him more than the feel of the sound, the beat of the rhythm, and the stride of the notes. It causes everything in him to sing. He can hear a song and his whole body begins to move. I mean, even if you don’t see it moving, it’s grooving to the sound.  It doesn’t matter what he’s doing, unconsciously he begins to sing. His love for gospel music is so apparent because God is present in his life. Through music God has taught him how to love and worship him. He has shown David his love and compassion through music. I don’t think words could describe the way he feels about anything the way he can express it through music.

So their reasons to be on American Idol are for family, parents, child or possibly that fifteen minutes of fame Andy Warhol said we all get. Maybe—but for some it’s the pure love of music and the feeling of emotions that call them to sing.

Song of the Week

22 February 2010

Songs
I am a big fan of the show American Idol! It all started for me when I first saw David Archuleta on AI‘s Season 7 in 2008. Since then I have followed the show for the past few seasons. I will admit, I have not been moved by many Idols be they past or present, the way I have been by David Archuleta. For me, he is the best American Idol to come from the show. Still, I am looking forward to watching the show this week now that the new Top 24 contestants have been chosen. They will be performing their first songs, starting with the women on Tuesday evening, followed by the men on Wednesday. On the Thursday night Results Show we will learn which contestants did not make it to the next round.

I always find the beginning of the performance nights on AI very exciting, and I am looking forward to seeing what all the contestants will bring to this new season. I already have a few favorites, but I am not going to say anything until I see how they do on Tuesday and Wednesday nights of this week. So what does all this have to do with my ‘Song of the Week’? you may be wondering. Well, as I was thinking about the show and this first week in particular, I thought about David Archuleta and his first week’s performance two seasons ago on February 19, 2008. It was that performance that cinched it for me. David Archuleta became my favorite! With that in mind,

The Song of the Week is…

“Shop Around”

“Shop Around” was written by Bill ‘Smokey’ Robinson and Berry Gordy in 1960. It is about a mother giving her now-grown son advice on how to find a woman worthy of being a good girlfriend or wife. The original recorded version of the song had a strong blues influence and was released as a single in Detroit, Michigan. However, Berry Gordy decided to record a pop-friendly version that would be commercially viable outside of the Detroit area. One night, he had Robinson and a cast of other famous artists of the time record “Shop Around” for the Tamla (now Motown) record label. This group became know as ‘The Miracles’. It was their version of the song that became a major national hit. The original record label credits Bill “Smokey” Robinson as the writer and Berry Gordy as the producer.

The single “Shop Around” is notable for being Motown’s first #1 hit on the Billboard Magazine R&B singles chart and the #2 hit on the Hot 100. “Shop Around” also reached #1 on Cash Box pop charts and is also noted for being the first million-selling record for The Miracles and The Motown Record Corporation. The song became a Grammy Hall of Fame inductee in 2006. The Miracles’ version of the song ranked at #495 on Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

“Shop Around” was the perfect song for David Archuleta to sing to his new audience on American Idol two years ago. He blew the judges away with his rendition of the song and won the hearts of many fans that night! I have posted the original version of the song by The Miracles and David’s performance from American Idol so you could compare the two. In my honest opinion, David’s version is more soulful. I love the way he sings the song. Both videos are fun to watch, especially as the singers dance—gotta love some of those moves! 🙂

The original song “Shop Around” as sung by The Miracles, featuring Smokey Robinson, 1960:

David’s version of “Shop Around” as performed on American Idol Season 7. February 19, 2008. This performance always makes me smile!

Hope you have a nice week and if you are planning on watching American Idol this season, I would love to hear your thoughts about it. And as always, love to hear your thoughts on “my American Idol,” David Archuleta, any time you would like to comment!! 😉

Take care all,
Katie
