David Aloha! The weather outside is frightful…I mean, delightful! It’s almost May, the month of flowers, and that means warm weather in the Northern Hemisphere. As we fans know, David Archuleta enjoys warm, even humid, weather. But as a frequent flyer, his experience of seasonal changes is often radical. He can be freezing in Utah one day and basking in the California sun the next. In the winter of 2009 it was cold even in Florida. David was there promoting his album and tour. Then he flew away to sunny Hawaii for a brief trip to sing at the Pro Bowl. Then he flew back to Florida to open the American Idol Experience at Disney. In less than ten days he had flown 12,000 air miles.

Photo of this week is…!

At the Pro Bowl on February 7, 2009, David Archuleta sang the national anthem in Honolulu. He was joined by more than 200 military volunteers and a spectacular flyover by Hawaii Air National Guard helicopters.

From Hawaii David wrote in his blog, “It’s so beautiful here, and I forgot how much I miss hot humid weather. It’s been a long time since I haven’t worn a scarf and jacket, because even last year during spring and summer, we were always inside cold studios or arenas…So before we went to Hawaii, I was in Florida doing promo. What was shocking is how cold it was there! I didn’t think I’d have to wear a jacket and scarf there, but it felt like Utah weather at some points…I’ll be heading back to Florida after Hawaii for the Disney thing this week, so I’m excited! I’ve been trying to not adjust to Hawaiian time, because I’m already in the Florida time zone mode lol.”

The Hawaiians were so excited they wouldn’t let him finish “Stand By Me.” Check it out on YouTube!

Type Bee: David Archuleta as Romeo or Hamlet?

Methinks I hath a midsummer night’s dream. Sirrahs, Mistresses, Cousins, and Hobknockers, gather ye ’round. For I hath an announcement of great import. The city of Murray, Utah, declares a festival in honor of William Shakespeare, whose 446th birthday was observed on April 23.

Methinks it a goodsome idea.
Wherefore, I beg ye all to hearken here.

Prithee! Who goes there?

enlargecomposite photo David Archuleta as Romeo, Shakespeare Festival, Murray City, UTMurray City, from whence the awesome lad David Archuleta hails, will celebrate Shakespeare Festival April 29 through May 1, 2010. Come one, come all to the three day festival and ’twill have a good time! If David Archuleta makes a grand appearance, perhaps he would quote Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: “Why, look you now, how unworthy a thing you make of me! You would play upon me; you would seem to know my stops; you would pluck out the heart of my mystery; you would sound me from my lowest note to the top of my compass: and there is much music, excellent voice, in this little organ; yet cannot you make it speak. ‘Sblood, do you think I am easier to be played on than a pipe? Call me what instrument you will, though you can fret me, yet you cannot play upon me.” (Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 2) You tell ’em, David/Hamlet!

Or perhaps, David would prefer a Happy Birthday rap to William Shakespeare. ‘Tis fun to talk like Shakespeare, like the Q Brothers, Hip-Hop Style:

“Happy Birthday, Willie Shakespeare,” 1:48

If David Archuleta should attend the Murray Shakespeare Festival and sing any of Shakespeare’s sonnets, David will be crowded “Sonnet Idol” then and there on the spot! Henceforth, forevermore.

The Song of the Week

26 April 2010

Songs
There is a song David Archuleta performed on American Idol Season 7 in 2008. It was during the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame week and the song David chose was a big favorite of mine. There was a bit of controversy about David’s performance of the song that evening on American Idol, but no matter, he wooed everyone in the crowd with his rendition. His voice hit all the right notes and David seemed to have so much fun singing it that he included it in his 4-song repertoire on the Idol’s Live Show later that summer. Have you guessed the song?

The Song of the Week is…

“Stand By Me”

“Stand By Me” was written by Ben E. King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and performed and produced by Ben E. King in 1961. “Stand By Me” was a Top Ten hit on the U.S. charts twice—in its original release in 1961, when it peaked at #4, and a 1986 rerelease which coincided with its use as the theme song for the movie Stand By Me, directed by popular American producer, Rob Reiner. After the film opened in theaters, “Stand By Me” peaked on the music charts again at #9.

Other accolades for “Stand By Me” include:

  • Number one on the R&B charts in 1961.
  • Ranked number 121 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
  • In 1999, BMI named it as the fourth most-performed song of the 20th century, with about 7 million performances of the song being covered by various artists.

Ben E. King’s original “Stand By Me,” with a video made for the 1986 movie of the same name:

David Archuleta’s American Idol performance of “Stand By Me” included lyrics from the song “Beautiful Girls” by American rap artist Sean Kingston. “Beautiful Girls,” recorded and released in May 2007, is based on the bass line and lyrical “association” of the Ben E. King hit “Stand By Me”. David’s version of the song led to some controversy, spurred on by the notorious TMZ, the TV tabloid, which claimed that an “insider source” said that American Idol producers did not know David was going to include Kingston’s line from “Beautiful Girls” and were afraid they would have to pay a usage fee. While Reuters and other news outlets got a black eye for rehashing the unconfirmed TMZ story, it is still not known if American Idol actually paid a fee for David’s brief “Beautiful Girls” chorus at the end of “Stand By Me.” Thankfully, the controversy was short-lived, and David went on to become even more popular with the fans after his performance that evening. David sang his “Stand By Me/Beautiful Girls” rendition during the American Idol summer tour.

Here is David Archuleta’s performance of “Stand By Me” from American Idol‘s Top 4 show which aired May 6, 2008:

David singing “Stand By Me” during the American Idol summer tour. What a charming performer he is! Note the way David changed the line from the song, “they will have you suicidal,” to “they will have you in denial.” My thought is that the latter phrase was probably more comfortable for him.

David Archuleta singing “Stand By Me,” Idol tour, Oklahoma City, August 28, 2008:

I love David’s version of “Stand By Me”. He puts so much soul into it. When he performed it on the Idol Tour that summer in 2008, many of us saw a new side of David for the first time: a more comfortable David who showed real confidence in his abilities to chat with the audience, hit some incredible high notes, and show off a few dance moves as well! When he thanked us for “standing by him,” and all the Top Ten Idol contestants, he endeared us to him even more. I know many, including myself, will stand by him for years to come! 😉

Take care all,
Katie

MTV’s Best Idol “Flawed” Poll

enlargeDavid Archuleta, "Imagine" by John Lennon, 26 Feb 2008, American Idol Top 20MTV’s Kyle Anderson conducted a poll asking “Which American Idol performance is the best of all time?” Conducted the day after Crystal Bowersox’s performance of “People Get Ready” on the current American Idol, Anderson said of Bowersox, “she elevated herself to the rare echelon of “American Idol” contestants who are in the conversation for the title of “Greatest ‘Idol’ Performance of All Time.”” The outcome of this poll was predicated on these two factors; polltakers quite naturally tend to vote for the last person they heard or read about in such glowing terms. This poll was flawed further by the fact that David Archuleta’s “Imagine,” a show-stopper for all time, was not included.

What’s MTV Newsroom Blog to do? Well, create a new “fan-nominated edition,” of course! The poll question was “Which fan-nominated “American Idol” performance is the best of all time?” The second poll included both Archuleta and Adam Lambert’s “Mad World.” Archuleta won handily.

Is MTV Newsroom Blog playing fast and loose with the Archies and the Glamberts?

David Archuleta sings at BritWeek Gala

23 April 2010

enlargeDavid Archuleta aces BritWeek performance, 22 April 2010, LALast night at the BritWeek gala in Los Angeles, David Archuleta sang the two songs that I had hoped he would choose. “Imagine,” appropriately a song written by British Beatle John Lennon, was an ideal choice because David has redefined the song with his Eva Cassidy-inspired version. “Prayer of the Children,” written by fellow Utahn Kurt Bestor, was perfect since the BritWeek dinner was a benefit for Save the Children. The other beneficiary, Virgin Unite, is a non-profit foundation of the Virgin Group, which unites people to tackle tough social and environmental problems in an entrepreneurial way.

David was brilliant! The event ‘went down like a bomb,’ which in British slang means that people really enjoyed it. In the US the meaning would be almost exactly the reverse, except when Randy Jackson says, “You’re the Bomb”!

Listen to snippets of both songs which was kindly posted by Juliana from Jaunted.
