David Archuleta, Reba McEntire & more Celebrate July 4th in D.C.
by Markette Smith
3 July 2010

David Archuleta skyrocketed to fame on American Idol when he sang “Stand By Me” to a live audience of screaming teenage girls. And now, on July 4th he’ll be at the U.S. Capitol singing the same tune, only this time the song will be dedicated to the American troops, said Archuleta in an interview with DC on HEELS….

A Capitol Fourth: Four Rehearsals
by Vanessa Williams
4 July 2010

Great photo of the Background Singers for David's Stand by Me, 4 July 2010, Washington D.C.I’m so impressed with the level of excellence I’ve experienced since being asked to participate in “A Capitol Fourth”. I’m especially impressed with the very polite, well-mannered, and delightful David Archuleta. No arrogance or swelled head with this young man. I’m also happy I had a chance to meet his mom, Lupe. It’s funny. All three of us background singers are old enough to be his mom! My own daughter is 10 years older than David. As old school as I am, it is SO refreshing that, in spite of his notoriety, he demonstrates such respect for his mom. That respect, then, carries over to everyone else he meets. He has been so gracious to all of us….

Smits, Archuleta play Washington tourists together

Of course they had more serious business to attend to in Washington during the weekend, but actor Jimmy Smits and singer David Archuleta were spotted at a lot of the typical touristy places, too — often checking out the town together. The 54-year-old “West Wing” veteran and 19-year-old “American Idol” runner-up visited the National Archives and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History together, bringing family and friends along, too….

David Archuleta is getting ready to shoot the video for his new single “Something “Bout Love.” Details from a casting call reveal that David will be reunited with “Crush” director, Declan White Bloom. The “young lives and good times” video will be shot in Los Angeles on July 16.

The production is looking for a lead girl:

Lead / Female / Caucasian, Ethnically Ambiguous / 18-24 yrs old. Cute charming beautiful young lady with a little bit of edge. Think an American Apparel model look. Need an actress for this role as opposed to a model.

They are also looking for skateboarders:

Featured / Male or Female / All Ethnicities / 18-24 yrs old
Highly experienced skater. If you can’t pull off a 360 kick flip clean,
bonless, or ollie a 6 step with a mute grab, you’re not what were looking for.

A little somethin’ somethin’ ’bout love: Part 2
by abanana77
10 July 2010

…when I’m thinking really hard about a difficult math problem… and apparently when I listen to David Archuleta’s new single for the first time…I had heard the snippet (of course) but wasn’t completely in love with it after hearing it. I was more excited to hear the rest of the song. Because from the snippet, I felt like the song had huge potential, and I was hoping the rest of the song would live up to it. But I wasn’t completely sold yet. I wanted the full song to go beyond what I’d heard in the snippet… and boy did it ever!….

Como La Flor David Archuleta will soon sing “Como La Flor” at the 30th annual Tejano Awards. His performance will be a tribute to Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995), known simply as Selena. A Mexican American singer-songwriter, dancer, model, fashion designer, actress, and record producer, she has been called “The Queen of Tejano music”. Though her life was cut short just before her 24th birthday, she dominated the Tejano Awards from 1987 to 1994.

David Archuleta ‘Song of the Week’

5 July 2010

by

Respond

SongsWhile David Archuleta was a contestant on American Idol Season 7 in 2008, he sang many songs from week to week. David’s performances were something I looked forward to and I have enjoyed sharing many of them here with you. Always giving his best, David is one performer who never disappoints. In April 2008, Neil Diamond was a guest mentor to the Top Five contestants. The Diamond song David chose to sing that week is perfect to share with all of you as we celebrate the 4th of July.

The Song of the Week is…

“America”

“America” is a patriotic song written and originally recorded by American singer-songwriter Neil Diamond in 1980 as part of the The Jazz Singer soundtrack album. It is also called “Coming to America” or “They’re Coming to America.” The song speaks of the excitement and anticipation of immigrants coming to America to live a new life of freedom, and it ends with an interpolation of the traditional patriotic song “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee.”

“America” became a hit single for Diamond in 1981, and reached #8 on Billboard’s Hot 100 list that year. It is often used for patriotic celebrations in the United States, though the song was a big hit abroad as well. Neil Diamond sang it at the re-dedication of the Statue of Liberty, on the occasion of its one hundredth anniversary in 1986. He also performed the song shortly after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Diamond modified the lyrics slightly during this live performance; toward the end of the song, instead of singing the line “They’re comin’ to America,” he sang, “Stand Up for America.” “America” was used in promotional advertisements for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Here is Neil Diamond’s version of “America,” with a beautiful tribute to America and all those who were given a new beginning as they arrived on her bright shores.

David Archuleta’s rendition of “America” from his Top 5 performance on American Idol. Neil Diamond, the mentor that week, said that David was a “musical prodigy”!

As we take the time to celebrate this 4th of July holiday, let’s remember those who fought to create this wonderful nation we call America, as well as those who crossed oceans and fled tyrannies with hopes of a better life, building their dreams and living in freedom. They are the ones who helped to make this great country of ours truly “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” In their memory, may God Bless America! 😉

Take care all,
Katie

Happy Independence Day banner art

The other day I heard a disturbing news report about American knowledge of our nation’s history. A poll conducted by the nonprofit Marist Institute asked, “From which country did the United States win its independence?” Twenty-six percent of those surveyed did not know that the U.S. achieved its independence from Great Britain.

enlargeDavid Archuleta sings The Star Spangled Banner, AI Homecoming, Salt Lake City, May 2008Then I read an inspiring story from David Archuleta which gave me hope. He usually spends Independence Day with his family, barbecuing and watching fireworks. He feels it is important to remind ourselves exactly why we celebrate these special occasions. He says, “I’ve been into watching National Geographic or the History Channel during the holidays…just so we realize, ‘OK, what are we celebrating again?’ and just go into the details of what happened in history.”

This 4th of July David is making a little history himself. He’ll be singing “The Star Spangled Banner” at the annual PBS special, A Capitol Fourth. He says, “I’m really excited to get to sing with the orchestra…and just the fact that I get to be a part of it is really cool. It’s always neat to be a part of something I watched growing up….it’s like you’re walking into a dream or something.”

David Archuleta will also sing “Stand by Me.” Hosted by Jimmy Smits, the concert and fireworks extravaganza also features performances by Gladys Knight, Reba McEntire, and Darius Rucker. A Capitol Fourth airs live on PBS from 8:00 to 9:30 pm ET, 7 Central, in High Definition from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.

Before you settle down to listen and watch, test your knowledge of the Fourth.

Happy 234th Birthday, America!

“My life is in the Lord’s hands,” he says. “Even in the toughest times, I know he is there.”

David Archuleta Grows Up With New Single “Something ‘Bout Love.”
by Robbie Daw, Idolator.com
1 July 2010

…And gone is all the teen whimsy and “Crush”-ing David did on his eponymous debut. This time around the 19-year-old Utah crooner is showcasing a more adult sound….
David is still treading down the pop trail, and unabashedly so. But with all the swirling synth loops, the dance beat and lyrics about broken hearts and being brought to your knees by the world, we can’t help feeling that—sniff!—our little Archie is all grown up. This is the type of soaring jam we can picture UK group Take That having a field day with, so naturally it gets our stamp of approval 100%….

by Kirsten Coachman for Blogcritics.org

“Something ‘Bout Love” is very different from any of the music on Archuleta’s 2008 self-titled debut album. The song itself is still very much a pop song, but it also have a dance vibe, which definitely is a nice surprise….
