Songs Luckily for me, I had a song in draft mode for this week, because I’m too ill with a migraine to write it. Appropriately, my intro is short and sweet for a song that is also “short and sweet.” Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
The Song of the Week is…
“Nature Boy”
“Nature Boy” is a song by Eden Ahbez, published in 1947. The song tells a fantasy of a “strange enchanted boy…who wandered very far” only to learn that “the greatest thing was just to love and be loved in return”. Although many singers have recorded it, the most successful version of “Nature Boy” was recorded by Nat King Cole and released by Capitol Records. It first reached the Billboard charts on 16 April 1948 and stayed for 15 weeks, peaking at #1.
The melody is akin in Antonín Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A, Op. 81 (1887), but it not known whether Ahbez had heard this work. Its haunting melody makes effective use of progressions in the key of D minor. The song has been used in several movies, notably David Bowie’s version for the musical, Moulin Rouge.
It’s a perfect ballad for David Archuleta to sing. Luckily, he did sing it a few years ago, and Dean Kaelin, David’s vocal coach, had the foresight to record it.
Here is an audio version of David Archuleta singing “Nature Boy,” accompanied on piano by Dean Kaelin:

There was a boy
A very strange
Enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far
Very far
Over land and sea
A little shy
And sad of eyes
But very wise
Was heAnd then one day
One magic day
He passed my way
And as we spoke of many things
Fools and Kings
This he said to me
The greatest thing
You’ll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved in returnThe greatest thing
You’ll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved in return
Have a great week all. 😉

That was great even though his voice has changed a lot. I love hearing him sing songs that weren’t on his albums or on American Idol. I always like it when he introduces new songs (well actually old songs we haven’t heard him sing before). I’d like to compile a list of songs for him to sing that he would really sound good doing. Everybody vote for David….only 2 days left…..vote every 20 minutes:

Great old song always loved to hear Nat King Cole sing that song. David’s voice is perfect for this type of song, maybe one day he will sing it again!
Sorry you’re not feeling well! Get better soon!
David could record an entire album of Nat King Cole songs and I’d be perfectly happy. Both singers are “unforgettable”. Thanks, Katie, and I hope you are completely well.
