David Archuleta and Mannheim Steamroller were the musical artists for Pandora Unforgettable Holiday Moments on Ice broadcast on NBC on Sunday, November 27, 2011. The collaboration turned out to be pure genius, and David was in his element performing with this well-known group. All of the performances were stellar, but David singing “Above The Northern Lights” was particularly stunning. Sublime and hauntingly beautiful describe both the melody (set in a minor key) and David’s vocals. Skaters Naomi Lang & Peter Tchernyshev, five-time U.S. National Ice Dance Champions, wonderfully interpreted the music with their choreography.

Chip Davis, founder of Mannheim Steamroller, co-hosted the program with Kristi Yamaguchi, and he referred to David as “the remarkable David Archuleta.” It’s clear there was mutual admiration between David and the Mannheim musicians. The group sent out the following tweet regarding this performance of “Above The Northern Lights.”

It certainly was a collaboration of true genius! The song suited David’s voice perfectly and he sung it unlike I’ve ever heard him before. He sounded so rich and beautiful with a deeper tone. I keep watching and listening to it over and over! Maybe there will one day be a recording with David and Mannheim for us! Who knows?
I agree with Mannheim Steamroller: David was perfect! And the skaters were sublime. Thanks for posting this on DA Buzzing, Katheryn. I had missed it last Sunday on TV, so it was great to watch David’s performance.
I don’t know why I am always surprised when David leaves me speechless time and time again. How can I be so affected when I already know he is simply amazing and that his voice reaches in and holds me captive. But then it happens again and I sit stunned, speechless, blown away by what his voice has the power to do. That is what Sunday’s performance for Pandora was like for me, I just wish all the world could have seen and heard the show. I would love to see a collaboration between David and Mannheim someday.
Cathy and kimbee, I agree with your thinking about David and Mannheim recording together! I along with many other fans tweeted Mannheim after the show with that very suggestion. The members seem like a great group of people. You could tell they enjoyed performing with David and with the skaters as well.
Minja, MJ’s videos have very clear audio, so at least the auditory portion satisfies, even if the image is on the small side!
