Father’s Day is a 100-year-old tradition in the United States. The first observance is believed to have been held on June 19, 1910, through the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. After listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at Spokane’s Central Methodist Episcopal Church in 1909, Dodd felt that fatherhood needed recognition too. Spokane is celebrating the Father’s Day Centennial Celebration with a month of events commemorating the day.

Neckties are still the most popular Father’s Day gift. However, with the sluggish economy, sales fell 18 percent in 2009, to 29 million. Revenue fell 16 percent, to $418 million, down from a peak of more than $1 billion in the mid-1990s, when power ties ruled the day.
